Total undercarriage

Hello. Looking for an answer to if a RV undercarriage is from the front of the back tires to the back of the front tires how does one do any maintenance required to what the undercarriage is protecting? Can't see the forest through the trees on this one.

The only maintenance items on my Gasser are lube points and general inspection. Oh and a fuel filter.

I'm 6'plus (about 6'2 now days peaked at 6'3) and over 300 pounds and with the rig sitting on the ground, Jacks up, can slide around under most of the motor home, can easily access ALL lubrication points.. Pick it up and drop it on jack stands (I have 4) and it is easier.. Some places I can even SIT UP and work on the rig...

As a Radio Operator I've run several coax runs half the length of the RV as well, all under the body and again no problems working there.
  • ricelake922,

    Good question.

Absolutely, there are wire and hoses from front to back. But they very rarely give issues-- they are out of harms way, generally in the top of the basement area.

I would not classify them as "maintenance items". In 14 years and a quarter million miles with three different DP's have never had an issue with this area unless I choose to run a new wire for some project.
  • You get on your back and shimmy yourself under there like the rest of us, or just write a check. It's not rocket science! But as stated there's not much going on. Lube the front end, u joints (gasser), etc...

Thank you for the response Wolfe10. Not to be argumentative but are there not lines or wires that go from front to back that are under the carriage that may need maintenance in case of failure or parts that need to be greased?

On most Class A gassers, I just slide underneath and do what needs doing. On DP's, I either extend the jacks if equipped, or use floor jacks, to lift where needed before blocking it up and then crawling under. Basically not much different than working under a car, just a lot more weight to make certain is safely supported.

  • Gas rigs do not have sealed undercarriages-- the drivetrains are accessible.

DP's do not have any driveline components between the wheels.

Said another way, it is a non-issue.
