Yes, cost is a factor.
For me, the Reese fixed arm adjustable width towbar was, IIRC, $145. I bolted the brackets to the front bumper of the Jeeps, with hefty (1/4 inch thick) steel back-up plates. Nothing bent, no0thing broke. The light wiring I did myself, with about $15 worth of wire and connectors.
The Roadmaster Stowmaster telescoping towbar cost me $250 used. My neighbor (professional welder/fabricator) built the brackets and welded them to the grill guard on the Dodge 1500. Again, nothing bent, nothing broke.
The dolly I had cost me $700 used. I would gladly trade the Roadmaster towbar as part of the cost of another used dolly. Selling the Demco Kar Kaddy I had was really stupid!
Labor costs are negligible. I don't put a value on "hobby work".
