Towable Car

All

I'm new to RVing and we purchased a Class C that we love. Like everyone we have big expectations of travelling and vacationing in our new home on wheels.

In some circumstances we want a vehicle upon arrival. So here is what we have. We own a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2012 Toyota Camry and 2012 Toyota Tacoma. I can't seem to find anyone towing them nor a place to tell me if it's okay to tow them or not by pull bar.

If there is another post addressing this please direct me there. I searched by since this is my second post I may have done so poorly.

Thanks in advance.

  • Owners manual and failing that contact the manufacturer directly.
  • Lanerd/Dusty R ... thank you .... two great things to consider. I promise i'll do my homework before i pull anything behind this beast.

    Ya'll are great! Thanks.
  • The Taco can also be done with a driveshaft disconnect.

As mentioned, you need to also take into consideration of the Class C's tow capacity. Usually it is limited by the hitch ration and for most Class Cs it is 5000 lbs. So you need to weigh the Lancer and also get the weight of the dolly and make sure the combined weight is less than 5000 lbs.

also.... there are several different types of dollies. One of the main drawbacks is how to tie down the wheels of the car to the dolly. Many of them require you to do it from under the dolly and in unfavorable weather, this can be a real drawback.

So, do your homework and research, research, research.

    Good luck

As previously stated, the owners manual for each vehicle will tell you if it can be dinghy towed.

If not, check ***Link Removed***, fill in the info for your vehicles to see if they can be towed.
It your Tacoma is 4WD, it may be towable.

Check the towing capacity of your Class C and the weight of each car.

A tow dolly may be your only option.

Looks like you were right on. A tow dolly for me. The Tacoma could be with a "lube pump". I'd rather pull the lancer so i'll look into a dolly. Thanks again.
  • Great information friends. Thank you. I'll go check the manual after work. Many thanks. I just didn't want to do damage to vehicle. Tow dolly is definitely on the wishlist if i can't pull w/ tow bar.

I don't mind either way. Thank you for the quick response and info.

  • Usually the information is in the vehicle's owners manuals under "recreational towing." With that said, essentially any front wheel drive vehicle can be towed with a tow dolly, regardless of what the owner's manual says. The back wheels are more or less just big casters or rollers on a front wheel drive vehicle.

It often depends on what sort of transmission or drivetrain options you have in the vehicle. Generally speaking, two wheel drive vehicles with manual transmissions are much more frequently able to be towed four down than ones with automatics.
  • My understanding is that all three are not towable as they come from the factory. Contact Remco (RemcoIndustries.com) to see if they can be made towable. A towdolly is always an option, I used one for 25 years, when I changed cars more often then RVs. There are many threads on the subject on RV.net. Also Motorhome Magazine and the FMCA magazine (Family Motor Coach Association) annual publish towing guides around Dec or Jan. Both have archives.
