Towing 2016 Smart Car

I promised I would post after towing my new 2016 Smart Car. I towed it from WI to Florida. It worked perfectly. The Blue Ox Baseplate pegs are wider than old Smart and it adds to stability. At 75 absolutely no wobble. I did not un hook for the three days and upon arrival I switched on battery and all is well. The fix to make it towable four down is easy. I loved my 2009 but this is so much better.

  • Did not feel it although I think my motorhome rides better in wind with the Smart in tow. Up and down mountains with ease. To tow I had a battery disconnect installed and a blue ox base plate installed. Then turn on switch to ignition level without starting. Shift from auto to mannual and hold downshift until the ignition indicator says 6E. Then one turn of key to the left to maintain the unlocked steering but turn off ignition. Then disconnect the battery,. Rolls just fine. When you wish to unhitch reconnect battery and move shifter to auto and park. The blue ox baseplate has the pegs wider by about 18 inches than the older Smart which makes stability better. I did modify my 2009 with wider tires and an inch more in diameter which helped towing but not quite as drastic as the photo Dennis has provided.

  • Out of curiosity did you even feel it back there? We don't feel the Toyota Yaris behind the bounder...
  • Always good to hear positive stories in the rv world. Cheers
