Towing a Vehicle With Motorhome

We tow a VW Bug behind the MH and have had 6 people in it, I would not recommand this however.

I think Remco has an "application chart" where you can type in any year, make, model of vehicle and it will tell you if it can be towed and how. At least they used to. remcotowing.com

Many can, I used to tow a 1992 Chevy Lumina APV. with a Remco Axle Lock (Turns it into a true trailer (This seats six or 7 as I recall.

What is it's loaded Gross weight

Make sure the Mini-van you choose is at least 100 pounds less than the difference.. plus.. What is the hitch rating, You also need to be below that. if you use a drop hitch (As I did) the hitch rating can easily get a /2 after it's stated capacity (IE: 5000 pounds / 2 = 2500 pounds. Which by the way is what I now pull).

Google Remco towing, go to the store link and enter the vehicle info for what you have or what you are considering, the web page (if it's new enough) will tell you what can and can not be towed and what you have to do to it.

I towed a 2004 Honda Odysey 4380# for 8 yrs. I also talked to a guy who towed an 05 using the same shift pattern although Honda didn't recommend the Odyssey for 4 down towing after 04!

The first two generations of Hinda Odyssey were four down towable and quite roomy. First generation (global market version) wasn't too heavy and is popular as a toad.

Mazda MPV and successor Mazda 5 would be towable if you can find the rare manual transmission version. Not much heavier then Gen 1 Odyssey.

Dodge Durango (first generation, at least) had seating for seven and was towable if you got 4x4 with two-speed transfer case. That means SLT or higher, not Sport or SXT trim.

Suzuki XL7 is mentioned. That model was also the platform for one of the iterations of the Saturn Vue (name was applied to at least three different cars) but I don't know whether the Suzuki clone version of the Vue had the third row seats.

You may be able to get transmission lube pumps or a half-shaft disconnect for an early Chrysler minivan. I know these accessories were made for second and third generation vans (we are now into the fourth generation, Chrysler says maybe the fifth but looks like 4 1/2 to me.

4x4 suburban and Yukon XL have 3rd row seating and neutral in the transfer case. Some possibility of finding low trim versions of Tahoe or Yukon with a front bench seat, to provide seating for six. You might also find this seating in extended cab Ford and Chevy/GMC pickups from the '90s and later. What you are looking for will be two rows of bench seats, and 4x4 drive train with a neutral selectable in the transfer case. Easier to find in older models when transfer cases were more simple, manually operated.

Whether your motorhome can tow it is a separate question. Towing limits range from about 3500 pounds two 10,000 pounds. A 3500 pound car with six seats is not as easynto find as a 6000 pound SUV with six seats.

Both FMCA in Family Motor Coaching and Motorhome Magazine have an annual supplement with towable cars. This year I noted that the Chevy Traverse and the Ford Flex were both on the list.

As others have said you need to see what your coach is capable of towing. Generally a gas coach is around 5,000 pounds and a diesel is 10,000 pounds. I know that Suzuki is no longer sold in the US but the Suzuki XL7 is under 5 K.

If your RV can handle 6500 lbe the Chevy Traverse seats 7 comfortably and tows 4 down with no mods.

What are you pulling it with? The MH specs will determine what you can tow. My daughter & SIL have a Buick Enclave that is a beautiful car and towable and holds 8. My MH has a 4000# tow limit so I have a Saturn that holds 4 people.
