Towing capacity

Just curious why a MH manufacture would install 5000 lb hitches on their product, warrant it, if they really could squeeze in 10,000 lb hitch without any concern? They sure would make customers more happy.

No need to reinvent the wheel!!

Check with one of the many on-line towing and hitch stores like etrailer, hitchweb, etc.

If your motorhome is a Ford chassis measure the from outside edge to outside edge of your frame rails. Should be 33 & 3/4 inch to 34 inch. Same frame width as a Ford F550 or F650 stripped chassis. Order a hitch for the truck with the correct frame width and you're good to go.

If you have a different frame width then call one of the hitch dealers and give them your frame measurements. They will have a product for you.

I just ordered and received a 10000 Lbs capacity hitch made by CURT for $199.00. I would have got the 5000 lbs model but the 10000 lbs was on sale.

As for welding, not required. The new hitch bolts on, all hardware included. Remove old hitch, Clamp the new one in place, drill the holes, bolt it on, apply correct tourque, you're done!

Remember to not exceed the recommended towing capacity in your owners manual.

Why am I replacing my hitch? Well that question is worthy of a complete new post, but I need to get in the garage and start my hitch replacement.

years back I was looking at a certain B van, Starcraft IIRC, and it would need such hitch work. when I was talking to the fabricator I asked what type of warranty, etc. I could get that the hitch assembly would be rated at 10,000 lbs. all of a sudden the discussions ceased. no way would he put it in writing. and he wasn't a bear cub on roller skates wearing boxing gloves.

Don't forget brakes on whatever you're towing. You may have enough "go" but no "whoa" and required in most states.

I was kinda thinking along those lines myself, if you noticed, but really didn't want to try and talk you into it without knowing or seeing what you actually had.

I'd give them a call and see what they might recommend and a good welding shop should be able to adapt and modify most anything if necessary. I know I could with a welder, a set of torches and some scrape steel. Only thing is, by the time I got done it would probably weigh an extra ton, along with being capable of 20K lbs in an overkill. Still don't know what the difference might be with a lesser one and it just could be a lot of extra bracing and straps that might be required. I think I could guarantee that the coach would pull itself apart before pulling off the hitch receiver itself.
