Over 40 yrs ago I was pregnant and ready to pop....had my mind on what the Dr. just said and ran a red light. The ticket I got said I could show up at a certain time in court or pay by check. Since the court date would have been when I possibly would have been in the hospital, I wrote a check and a letter explaining why I couldn't show up. I also apologized for running the light. 2 weeks later I got all but $10. back. My husband was speeding in California, and rather than take time off from work, he sent a check and apologized. He got all but $50 back. It was explained to me that the ticket amount is like a bail. You show up or acknowledge you'll get a reduced charge. Don't know if it would work everywhere but certainly worth the time to write a letter.
