Transfer Switch Maintainence

Reading the latest copy of Motorhome magazine, I came across an article about Winnebago's recall on transfer switch connection tightness. Having been an elevator technician in my working life, it had been beaten into my consciousness to tighten electrical connections on large relays once a year. As a matter of course, I tighten the terminals annually on our motorhome's transfer switch and always find at least one that has slightly loosened from either vibration (the relays come in with a bang!) or just expansion and contraction of the wires from heat. It's a very important thing to check as a loose connection can cause heat buildup and damage to the terminal or ruin the complete transfer relay. Make it a point to check them..just be sure to unhook from shore power and have the generator and inverter off when you do it!
  • If you are an old mechanic, you probably have a thin point file that you use to remove any burn residue from the contacts as well.
Obviously, this is done when the vehicle is NOT plugged in to shore power or with the generator running.

Let me put it this way: Many RVers have a few screws loose.. (The kind you tighten with a tool however)

It is a good idea to check 'em from time to time,

The other thing: When transferring (Shore to genny or other way around)

Minimize power use turn off Water heater Fridge and AIR CONDITIONERS (leave A/C off for AT LEAST 3 minutes) or better yet turn off MAIN breaker.

Switching, with high load especially with inductive loads (A/C) is very hard on the solenoids and may weld the contacts making them.. History,
  • I've been in the HVAC industry all my adult life so its my second nature to tighten electrical connections at every opportunity. I even open the circuit breaker panel and give all the lugs a tighten on occasion. If it has a screw lug, eventually it will become loose form expansion.
  • Going thru the transfer switch, breaker panel, power cord, generator power connections and DC power distribution is part of my Spring dewinterizing list of activities.
