Transmission cooling fan

I have a 1987 Georgie Boy class a. Chevy chassis, 454 engine. There is an electric cooling fan in front of the radiator. At the dash there is a toggle switch to turn the fan on and off. Problem is as the fan runs for a while the switch gets so hot you can hardly touch it and when you do turn it off the fan continues to run. Any help?
  • Easy $10 solution. Use a RELAY to power the fan with the switch only providing the signal.

Most switches were not designed for high-amp loads.
  • Thanks Nutinelse. As matter of fact the toggle switch does hav a small fuse in the back of it. Are you saying the relay should turn the fan on and off automatically? There is a small black box on back of the switch and the fuse is mounted on it. Maybe that is the relay.
  • Is this factory or prior owner modification? It would appear the switch is not properly rated. The entire circuit should be reviewed before the smoke comes out. There could be some type of thermal control that keeps the fan on for a time... or the switch is melting internally :E
  • Sounds like you are drawing way to may amps through the wire to me, and I would also guess there is no relay or in line fuse. Maybe also that the wire is way to small.

You're going to want to find out how many amps the fan draws because that will tell you what size wire and relay to use and you should be using the switch to turn on a relay, not running the fan.

Also I would not think that is a trans cooler, more like a fan to help cool the engine. But without seeing it or more details hard to say.

    Hope this helps ..
