Transmission Dipstick

I was checking fluids today and noted that my dipstick on the Allison 3000 transmission was missing. The top cap was there but the stick itself must be in the tube. Is there any way to retrive it and would it do any harm to leave in the tube?

Thanks

  • Electronically checking oil is OK but it doesn't take the place of actually sighting the stick prior to leaving on the trip. The tranny has be 140' before you can get a reading, so I guess the best daily pre-flight to pull is to look for a big oil leak spot under the tranny before you start, then as you go down the road do your dash thing.
  • Anyone have a link to the way to check the fluid level through the electronic pad ?

I tried to google it but I am not getting the correct words searched to get it to pop up.

    Thanks !

  • Thanks Guys,

I could have sworn that there was a dipstick but now I am not so sure. I guess my concern is if there was one present and slipped down the tube, could any damage occur?

At some point the chassis builders quit putting dipsticks in the tubes. There is probably still a short one coming straight up out of the transmission that can be accessed from inside. Allison encourages using the sifter pad to check fluid level.
  • Fossilhound, I too could have sworn I saw our transmission dipstick when the coach was new. Then when I went to check it after the first transmission service, there was no dipstick. I had a friend check to see if it was in the tube but he couldn't find it. So, maybe it was never there?

The shop always checks the fluid from the transmission pad. I would like a dipstick though, just haven't gotten around to getting one. After 6 yrs. of ownership, I probably won't, LOL!
