Transporting Kayaks

We are looking to transport kayaks on-top of our tow car. We have purchased the rack for the car and the cross bar, now we need to buy the j-bars. These are expensive, was wondering if there may be a cheaper solution.TIA.

We don't use Kayak J racks for ours. I place one facing up and one facing down, side by side, and use to ratchet straps to strap them down to our Thule roof rack. They don't move an inch and have been doing this for several years and many miles with zero issue.

Why one up and one down?????? Why not both up, or both down?????
