Travato and Adding a Spare Tire

I have been wondering about adding a spare tire. I don't want to have a flat where the tire has to be replaced by buying one and have road service come out with it.
I'm thinking about adding this tire carrier so I will always have a spare. Here's the link:

I would get the center mount.
Any thoughts about this?
Thanks.
  • I wonder if you can get one of the small space saver tires like they have in some cars. To get you out of a bind. And to save space and weight.
  • Nope. You get an inflator kit, like most new cars these days. Most forgo even the "donuts" we used to get.

It's a pretty common truck tire on these though. Can't imagine you'd have a hard time getting roadside assistance to bring you one unless you were way out in the boonies.

Now on a class A, or even some C's, that would be a different story. This is just a pickup truck tire we are talking about.

I would never consider owning an RV without a full size spare. I didn't realize the Travato doesn't have one. If I couldn't correct that problem, it would be a deal breaker.

I also did not realize it did not have a spare-can it be out underneath like other vans? does the prostar come with a spare?

  • I wouldn't carry a full size spare. Just too big. I've only had a couple flats in my entire driving history.

But if you must, instead of one of those mounts, just get a swing away hitch carrier and put the tire inside that. Use the remaining space for other stuff.

As far as weighing your coach, that's a good idea to see where you are at eventually. But it's pretty silly to even suggest that you are marginal on CCC. You have lot's of capacity left, and certainly enough for a 100 lb wheel.
  • Why not get a fold down type like Roadtrek or Pleasure way? I can't remember who has them. They can be used as a grill table for your plug in barbecue.
  • I'd suggest loading it as for travel (full water, gas, LP, food, etc, & passengers). Take it to a truck scale or other weighing place (I use an Allied Van Lines branch). Get it weighed. Compare to the GVW on the door or glove box sticker. The tire, wheel, and carrier are probably going to weigh in the neighborhood of 100#. Be sure you've got that margin.

Jim, "The doc said that my X-ray showed a broken rib, but not to worry. They'd fixed it with Photoshop."
  • At the top of that page, there is a video showing the carrier swinging to the right. It may not clear the door 100% but it appears it would clear enough to open the door for access. I will be calling them to make sure it is going to work.
