Traveling I-80

Uhhh I80 does not go close to Rapid City.
But since you asked, the KOA in Rapid City is suppose to be pretty nice. They may offer shuttle bus service.

I was at Rushmore two years ago... Lotsa rv parking available.. As for 80, Getting around Chicago sucks but it always did.... Bring lots of change...

I remember 2 things about 80......diesel fumes and the stench of pig poop.

We went up to Rushmore on our 32' H/R gas V10, wasnt that bad, but it wasnt easy either.
We stayed at a C/G on the south side of Rapid City, asked the man there about going up, said it was pretty steep hill, bout 6 or 7% grade he thought.
Coming back down, there was a sign like a trucker sign to use lower gears & stated 10% grade, wow!, didnt see a sign going up so didnt know.
There were those big tour buses there & it is only one road into the place, so they made it up to there ok.

If you go I-80, stop in that Iowa I-80 truck stop & check it out. Biggest truck stop I've ever seen. Even got a place you can wash your pets, place for hair cut, Dentist & 5 different eaterys.

Why? I travel it all the time, it's in pretty good shape now. You're going to be going over Donner Summit on it, but it's the best mountain pass over the Sierras.

I'll be taking 74 out of the twin cities after crossing into Illinois. Forget Chicago...nothing but gangsters live there anyhow :W

Most roads in Ca. do. :W Just came north on 99 today, like a washboard in a few places.

80 through Sacramento will be busy during commute hours. Same thing applies through Reno. 80 through Nevada, while boring, is an easy ride. 80 through SLC is a nightmare during commute time. As you leave SLC, there is a good pull up the canyon to the park city turnoff. Then it's an easy ride past Wanship, Coalville, and on to Evanston. I don't recall anything that was exciting through Wyoming. Different story in late fall and winter, where that stretch can be real treacherous..

Hate to disagree, but improvements over the past several years have made this section of 80 much easier. Just don't go through during Chicago rush hours. Only one toll that I'm aware of, just before Indiana. I believe it's largely toll beginning in Indiana and heading east. OP doesn't say how far into Illinois he's going, so might be a moot point.
