Traveling with Direct TV

Hi folks, we are preparing for our first MH. I've read numerous posts on Dish vs Direct TV, etc. I'm still uncertain about one issue so I'm looking help here. We ordered our MH with the Traveler satellite. We are out for about 3 months at a time. If we change from cable tv to direct tv at home can we hook our home box up to our MH on the road at no extra charge? I understand we will not be able to get local networks while traveling.

Are there other issues I need to consider?

Thanks all.
  • I take a directv standard receiver from the house to the motor home when we leave. If you get high defination direct tv not sure you can do same. My motor home antenna will only receive standard definition tv which is what i have iñ my house. Not sure you can get standard directv with new service anymore. I believe your traveler antenna will receive HD so you might call direct tv and ask them. When you call ask to be referred to the RV office or section. Fairly new and not lots of people are aware but they've been very helpful when I have called. Just need to make sure all your sat equipment is compatsble

We too used to do this a few years back... No problem for us doing the DIRECTV Standard SAT TV. We would bring along our own portable SAT Dish with a two head port and a couple of SAT RCVRs from the house. Alot of times we had to call DIRECTV to reset our SAT RCVRS as they lost their settings sometimes. Never a problem having them reeset the SAT RCVRs. You can also do this ON-LINE just need your account - just need your acct number...

We would run two RG cables from the dish setup with one SAT RCVR in the main area and the second SAT RCVR in the bedroom area.

What we did was use the video output of the SAt RCVRs and this allowed us to use our TV remotes to select SAT-CABLE-OTA TV signals...

Don't know how any of this would work with today fancy stuff you have mentioned... Getting full high def SAT TV may be a different story...

When the NATL BROADCAST changed over to digital high def TV in 2009 we stopped bringing along our SAT TV items and just use our OTA BATWING to pick up HDTV from the local towns...

I hear some folks run into problems with DIRECTV when they try to get them to install their system to just run from the HOME ACCOUNT units in the RV's... DIRECTV also has a separate monthly account program for using DIRECTV in RVs but as far as I know you can use your home account anywhere you want to. The DIRECTV local station is geared to your ZIPCODE and will not work when get outside you zip area...

  • You can call direct tv, tell them where you are on the road, address and zip code and they will update your receiver to that location for your local channels. I do this when I am at a location for several days.
  • Yes, we just take a SD receiver from the house and we are gone.
You will not get your house's local channels once you get away from home, just use your over the air.
