tray for eating?

My husband likes to eat while he is driving, and our center console is too far away from the driver's seat and too small to conveniently hold dinner.

Does anyone know of any type of tray that would attach to the driver door, or steering wheel (which doesn't sound very safe!) or extend from the floor to make eating while driving more convenient?

And yes, I do tell him that it would be more civilized if we stopped and enjoyed a leisurely meal at a rest stop...to no avail!

  • There really isn't anything that will hold food and drink from the door or steering wheel that could be used to eat while driving.

It's possible you could find or make a floor console with a dropped top to place next to his seat on the right side. The dropped top should be set in from the edges so the food won't fall off the console.

I would also limit the types of meals he eats while driving to those he can easily pick up and put down (think fast food restaurant food - nothing requiring a plate, fork, spoon, or knife).
  • Do not do anything to help with this behavior. Distracted driving can cost you your life.
  • I think one question you need to consider is, do I want to explain to the police officer is that we crossed the center line and collided due to dropped dinner...Really, it sounds like you guys are considering making your driving area more like a table. It does not sound like a good idea.
  • If your husband can't stop for a few minutes to eat he needs more than a tray. Please post all routes traveled so i can avoid them.
