Yes I believe the bearings are worn. End play is very little side to side seems a little to much. I have a 2002 7.3 and replaced the turbo compressor wheel with a wicked wheel.
The good thing I believe is the missing peices of the wheel went into the exhaust and are in the muffler or got blown out I hope.
