Both DISH and DirecTV, and others, use Multimedia Over CoAx (MoCA) technology to send HD-quality data over regular RG6 (or even RG59) coax. You can read about the MoCA technology here.
Moca does not send a HD signal over the coax. It takes a HD signal, converts it for transmission over coax and then converts it back at the other end of the coax with a Moca device. You cannot hook coax directly to the back of your TV to a Dish receiver via coax, you must have Moca Device decode the signal. Now it may be built into Dish and DTV but you still need a decoder at the other end to convert the signal back to HD. The Moca device will be another device that will need to be plugged into a wall socket and additional cost. It may be worth having if you can watch two shows on different TV's but I am not completely if/how the satellite providers do this with Moca.
