I have one and always have. The problem is the one time I had a non-repairable flat it took till the next day for them to locate a replacement tire.
And sometimes pay through the nose for a mismatch. I have a mounted spare and if needed, it's to get me to a tire shop and maybe buy two new that match. For instance my fronts are not that far away from being replaced anyway.
One might use the tube idea, as well as the tire wrap for an unmounted spare down under and sounds like a good idea.
