Use automatic levelors during storage?

My drive way where I park the coach has a slight slope, not much, but if the rear wheels are in the air, the coach would roll back or since it does not have that much slope, it would put pressure on the levelers which is not good.

The only way to lift the coach off the ground is to have a level area and then you should put some blocking under the pads to support the weight and cover more area as a pad. Then if you are going to work under the coach, you should put the proper stands under the axles.

I have the Quadra levelers and they have safety ball valves in case a hose blows up while the coach is in the air. But there are some levelers that do not have the safety features. So they are extremely dangerous if they do not have some kind of a safety feature. Not sure if HWH has a safety cog or valve.

The proper way is to remove the wheels, put the RV on blocks and put your tires into a dark corner in your garage with a soft blanket. Check on them daily and don't forget to tuck them in at night. Once a week take them for a walk and gently roll them around. They also enjoy soft music.

Seriously - it doesn't matter if you store it on jacks or not. Treat your jack legs with some sort of dust free lubricant if you have them down for an extended period of time, but there's no right or wrong answer. In my own experience I had one freeze to the ground when trying to leave for a trip last Feb. I finally got it free but I don't store it with them down any more. Haven't noticed any more aging on the tires or flat spots as some claim happens when they sit.

I don't have levelers and my tires hold the air for years, yet one winter front tire went down to the ground and not having other support, it come off the rim, so I could not reinflate it, what cost me tire truck cost.
Now I put 6x6 blocks under the axle, so when tire goes down for some reasons, at least it will stay on the rim.

This is just like anything else RV related, it's COMMON SENSE. If the ground/driveway/garage/earth is perfectly flat or level, then having the tires off the ground is no big deal. You can flame away at this but, I've done it a few hundred times and, both me AND THE COACH, are still alive.

I say common sense because, like anything, some folks MIGHT get the impression that, if they can lift the tires off the ground when flat, and the coach doesn't move, then why not at any slope?? Well, there's no answer for Einstein's out there. Common sense must prevail in given situations. Having all 6 off the ground has worked dozens of times for me in servicing and performing maintenance and repairs. The coach HAS NOT ROLLED AWAY YET!

And yes, it does put undo strain on the air bags. I don't leave it like that for any longer than needed. If more time is needed for a given repair/service/alteration etc. and the wheels are off the ground, in comes the jack stands.

But, no one's forcing anyone here to do what they don't feel is safe or wrong. Do what you choose for your given situation.

The first winter we owned our Georgetown, I decided to unload the tires a bit to prevent a 4-month flat-spot. We live across the street from houses that are waterfront on a salt-water marina. Within a week, there was a film of rust on the exposed piston rods. Fortunately, it polished off.

I decided that the tires could handle the stationary "life style", but every 4 weeks or so, I'd raise the wheels off the ground and rotate the tires 90 degrees. The tires were just fine when we sold the rig after 4 years.

Levelers are for leveling, they don't, and should not, lift any of the coach's wheels off the ground. That's why you need a brake.

I used some left over 8x8 PT posts from the pole barn. Place each one under jack pad and dump suspension. This will take some weight off the tires while leaving the jacks in a nice hydraulic bath for the 5 months of storage.

You can believe what you want to believe but I believe that levelers are not designed to prevent the coach from moving. IMO, that is why the first thing in most manuals says that the parking break must be set and an electronic lock out is in place until the brake is set. To think that even though the manual says don't you can and will could result in hundreds to thousands of dollars in damage. There is also a chance of injury.

My rear levelers have a sensor to only allow them to extend so far. It will not allow me to raise the rear tires off the ground. Error I get is excessive slope and it stops. My previous coach did not have this safety feature. I am thankful for it.

On my previous coach, with HWH hydro, I learned not to have fronts off the ground. Once, when on a large slope I brought the front end up and with the rear (parking) breaks on, the front started twisting/moving sideways. I had manual joy stick on that rig. I immediately dropped the front but was too late. Shaft was no longer true and would not retract without a pry bar. Had to send it to HWH for repair and reinstall.

I do not take any wheels off the ground, except with blocks.

I lower the levelers on my coach just to take off some of the weight off. I park my coach on a concrete drive way, sometimes up to three months and do not worry about putting plywood or rubber or what ever between the concrete and the tire. The only thing that I know that does damage tires is the sun. That is why it is important to keep the UV rays off. The sun will destroy just about anything if exposed for long periods at a time.
Do not lift your tires completely off the ground.
