Seals were made of leather, cork and oil impregnated ropey materials years ago and did dry out and sometimes leak. Those materials have been gone for years and the newer materials don't seem to experience the drying effect and only leak when improper installation or damage is a factor in my experience.
I was thinking the same thing. I put a 454 that had been sitting 7 years into a rig that had been sitting at least that long. It runs great, generator runs great (after sorting out some carb adjustments). No leaks.
Yes, for those paying attention to my threads I sprung a significant oil leak but it was self inflicted (a gasket that I had installed).
I put a new oil pan gasket and rear seal on the engine before I installed it, but I'm thinking that might have been a waste of time.
