V10 Oil Consumption-Continued

I have had oil consumption problems for sometime. The dealer started an "oil consumption Test" for 3,000 miles, checking and adding oil at a dealer in the process. I went through 1 1/2 quarts of oil in the first 2300 miles, which was consistent with my history. Since there is a TSB out on this from Ford, I planned to get it fixed. Since the last quart of oil was put in, I traveled about 1300 miles, AND, I used just a "scant" of oil, I mean hardly measurable. Since I now have 18,000 miles on the rig, I find it hard to believe my oil usage was due to break-in. Any ideas out there as to what is going on?

  • Mine (with 86k mi.)will burn about a qt in 2k miles with 10-20W but absolutely none with 10-30W. I stopped using 10-20.
  • The PCV valve could have just been stuck, and finally freed itself after a good hard driving cycle. Short cycling the motor (turn on, move rig, turn off rinse and repeat) can cause the cool oils to gum it up. That kind of cycle is common during the build phases of a motor home and any other aftermarket body. At least its not a diesel. Ford had to replace many diesels due to the damage from short-cycling them.
  • I understand the issue with the PCV valve, but the problem appears to have resolved itself. I am just wondering how to explain this. If it was the PCV valve the problem would still be present.

X2. Also only use Motorcraft replacement PCV valve. Aftermarket's are garbage.

  • I heard of a similar problem in Oct '12 when I was on my way back to MN from California with my used fSBO '99 Lazy Daze. I met an owner of a brand new (at that time) Lazy Daze (Ford V10) and he said it was burning oil. Hopefully your issue is resolved now.

My '99 (104,000) burns no oil just running around here in MINN. It did burn up a little on the way back from CA in '12.

I check it regularly and have it changed in the spring and fall regardless of mileage. It's cheap insurance and I like to have the Ford tech do an inspection each time.

I want to be out front of any maintenance issues especially on an older unit like mine.
