First let me start out by saying that we are full timers. We have had two fifth wheels, a 35 footer and a 38 footer, which we pulled with a 2005 Dodge diesel one ton. We loved the fifthwheels but also noticed how much easier it was for our friends who had motorhomes to set up and break camp. We decided we would try one. We purchased a 2011 Georgetown 378TS which is 37 ft. 6in. in length. We loved the floor plan except for the small bedroom with a short queen bed. The V10 did admirally and in two years of travel we never found a hill we couldn't hold 60 mph on. Of course we didn't make a western trip in that time. The main problem with the V10 was us was the noise it made when going up a big hill when it would finally shift down to second gear and it would rev up to 5200 rpms to hold that 60 mph. Having towed my fifthwheels with a Dodge Cummins I knew there was something better. We decided we would try and find a used diesel pusher. After about a year of searching we finally found a 2006 Gulf Stream Tour Master with a floorplan we liked and a 330 HP Mercedes engine on a frieghtliner chassis in our price range. The 330 HP Mercedes puts out 1000 ft. lbs. of tourque coupled with an Allison 2000 transmission. There is absolutely no comparison with the noise and ride of the DP to the gasser. Combined with the engine in the rear and the airbag suspension it is pretty hard to beat. In the 900 mile trip from Fort Worth Texas to Wisconsin after purchasing the motorhome it downshifted from 6th to 5th gear one time out on the interstates. After putting 6000 miles on the V10 this was just amazing to us. On top of that we averaged 7.2 mpg with the gasser and got 8.9 mpg with the DP wich easily makes up for (and then some) the difference in the price of the two fuels. Our Tour Master is a 40 footer with three slides. We couldn't be happier with our decision on the DP. You just set the cruise control and go. Oh, I should add the we towed a 2011 chevy equinox with both motorhomes. Finally, my conclusions are that as previously stated, if you stick to 35 ft. and less the new Ford V10 is a pretty good combination, but for 36ft. and above I'd stick with a DP. And just for the noise factor and difference in torque I'd go with a DP period. Plus we have a huge bedroom with a king sized bed and storage, storage, storage.
