I had the same idea as the OP, but with our "pair" of Walmart batteries. As with the first set of another brand, one of the two batteries starts to fail within 3 years. Then our charger over-charges the pair with boil-overs happening because it can't achieve the right charge.
It seems I can't get more than 2 real good years from any brand of standard wet pair of 12V batteries. So our 3rd pair of batteries, I decided to invest heavy into two 6V AGM in series from Sam's Club. This is similar to flashlights and everything else using dry cell where batteries are always stacked in series, never in parallel.
I hope to have more energy for our camping needs and last for twice as many years. One thing certain with the AGMs, I won't be dealing with checking fluid levels and managing boil-overs.
