Water Softener System

Have used it for the RV for about 3 years now...Love it and if you can't tell the difference between the hard water and the condition water, your doing something wrong. Makes showering and laundry nice and easy and the general consenus is that it keeps fixtures free of mineral deposits(longer life).

It is similar to others like the "On-The-Go" water softener which is the one Camping World sells I believe.

Both are 8000 grain units which means they will last longer than those with smaller numbers without requiring regeneration. Some folks use "Water Sticks" but the biggest one of those I have seen is only 1500 grains. The 10,000 grain units will last even longer before needing regeneration. I didn't have room for the bigger 10,000 grain model so I got the 8000 grain one.

In AZ where we spent most of the winter the water hardness is about 50 grains per gallon. That means that an 8000 grain unit will soften about 160 gallons before needing to be regenerated. Since we use about 13 gallons of water per day we have to regenerate every 12 days or so.

In our home in CO we have a water hardness of 20 GPG, there the softener will last about a month.

my shower and sinks, toilets look brand new. DO get a water softener. I have the On The Go system. I to tote it around in a milk crate. I installed a pre filter on the inlet.

I have a water softener and I love it! We travel out West and encounter a lot of hard water. The soft water stops all the water spots and makes everything much easier to clean. I have a portable unit. The water goes from the faucet through our filters (we have sediment and charcoal filters) to the water softener and into the coach. Everything is external to the coach. We get the filters from the rvwaterfilterstore web site. We have the Flow-Pure 10000. It uses regular table salt for charging.

I st4rongly recommend you get the better brass quick hose connects from the RV water filter store to connect the hoses. They are much better quality than the ones you get from the big box stores.

Just got a flow-pur 10000 - now I wonder why it took so long - easier to clean the sinks and shower and now my coffee taste is consistent

I have the 16000 On-The-Go and have been using it for 2 years. Keeps the shower, frig ice maker clean and the washing machine working great plus the clothes are cleaner.

RV portable water softeners use resin beads to soften hard water.

Simple design and easy to use.

As water flows thru softener minerals replace the sodium on the resin beads. When beads become coated you do a regen.
Regen is accomplished by pouring a box of table salt into softener and then letting it soak in the brine for 20-30 minutes then you rinse the excess salt and the minerals that have been displaced off the resins for 15-20 minutes (small pencil size flow)then you place it back in service.

8000 grain softener will treat 800 gallons of 10ppb hard water (the harder the water the less gallons can be treated)
Today RV portable softeners come in 10,000 grain and larger sizes.

We used ours during our 7 yrs of FT traveling in areas where hard water was (NM, AZ, TX etc.)

On-The-Go, FlowPur, Water Stick are some popular brands.
They ALL use same resin concept, same table salt to regen so buy whichever unit is cheapest.

We live in a very hard water place. The unit cost from $600 plus and uses 9 lbs salt per week. That is a hard water hardness of 54 to 60 plus. That gets you just over 550 gallons of soft water. That said, when one states they use a spoon of salt for a week, they are not treating anything. Our unit is 32,000 grains. The tank is about 2 foot tall and 12 inch in diameter. It just fits inside our water section door. The salt container holds about 20 lbs of salt. This was purchase many years ago. The controller head last about 10 years before it needs new parts. If time has past then a new controller is needed at a cost of close to $400 plus. Our home unit is 4 foot tall and runs almost the same in price but just bigger. The salt contain is two foot in diameter and holds Many 50 lbs bags of salt. If you let the salt run out and your are in city water the brine resin will die so to speak. This is due to the fluoride which stop the resin BB from working any more. Cost for new Resin about $120 per recharge. They last about a max of Tens years, depending on your city water Fluoride treatment. Cost to run is 50 lbs of salt per month and water to clean the media. Soft water does not dry you out. Only a table spoon of soap for a load of cloths. Dishes sparkle. Sorry long winded.
