Water softeners

Some advice please. We spend 7-8 months in central Florida. I am considering buying a portable water softener for our coach. I need some advice on what kind to get, how big, etc.
Thanks, safe travels

  • I have used the Flow Pur 10,000 for 2-3 years at our ranch that has very hard water.

    It works perfectly...
  • The Flow Pure does not require solar salt but only table salt you can find at Wal-Mart and easily pours into the unit for regeneration. It also has a built-in back flush system (I believe they all do) which is rarely necessary but there if you hook up to some really bad incoming water. There is not salt taste but that does not mean that a bit of added salt is not there. Most water softeners will explain this in the usage manual. I am sure the TravelSoft is a good unit but I don't know what the "grain" rating is. The Flow Pure is rated for 10,000 grains before recharging is required.
  • We spend 1/2 half a year in Texas also, and use one similar to the Flow pure called TravelSoft. It uses 8 cups of solar salt to regenerate and has a back-flush mechanism built in. We use a Camco filter in front of the softener and have used that setup for 10-12 years. Would not be without it. Once backflushed and purged of salt, don't get any salt taste but may be a minute quantity in the water. Never have any mineral buildup in sinks or shower like we had before using the softener. Hope this may help, Happy Trails Bert
  • That the exact same water softener I have used for many years. It takes 2 pounds of common table salt to recharge.

I usually recharge once a month but you can tell the water is just a bit less soft by the end of the month (we are in TX a lot) but I am too lazy to do it every couple of weeks. When you first install one you may find that some of your spigots/shower head may clog as the calcium in your lines/heater are dissolved and break loose. It's all worth it though as the soft water feel great and keeps your plumbing clear of all that build up.
However, if you have any issues with too much salt in your diet the water softener do add a small amount of salt to all water used in your coach including cooking and drinking.
  • I did this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050EITTK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 a couple of years ago in Texas where we had really hard water. If you're considering one location I suggest testing the water first.

Back in Texas I regenerated it with two cans of plain salt every two weeks.
