That is, in fact, how I have done it in the past.

leaving OHIO carry 5 or 10 gallons INSIDE the RV (Jerry cans or gallon bottles)

    When you are comfortable de-winterize

OPTION to flying J is overnight in a genuine campground and de-winterize there.
  • When we head south in the winter, we usually de-winterize in Kentucky at a c.g. and fill up with water. The first night out we use bottled water. Works for us.

Why can't you add water in OH? If you fill your tank before you leave, even the night before there is no way that volume of water will freeze especially with the furnace on en route to your destination. I would never leave home without water. You can still leave antifreeze in your lines just don't turn the water pump on til you are safe from lines freezing (again shouldn't happen with the furnace on). I have left for a trip in the dead of winter, temps in the 20s. Fill the water night before, put the furnace on 45, and I am ready to go in the am. No issues.

Sounds like you do not plan on using CGs on the way down. I would not get water at FlyJ... not that's there's anything wrong with it but how long are you going to be blocking the RV lane? You can overnight at a HomeDepot and get water too.
  • When we used to begin our winter travel on Jan 2 from Rochester NY we would fill with water in the driveway and dewinterize with the furnace on. The furnace kept the utility bay warm enough and the volume of water in the FW tank was great enough to prevent fast freezing. We drove through some freezing weather and stayed in our son's driveway with temps down to 15 overnight. That coach was an '04 Southwind and before that an '01 Daybreak.

We burned a lot of propane keeping warm but I don't remember ever freezing the water system. I would NOT be happy getting fresh water at FJ. I would stop at a campground along the way however and put some water in the tank for travel purposes. Once you get south of I 40 most campgrounds are open.
  • If it's too cold to dewinterize before we leave, we fill a few gallon milk jugs to take with us. By the eve of the second day we are in S GA or N FL so we dewinterize at the campground.
    Works for us.
