What are the proper ways to keep batteries charged.

What is the normal procedure to follow when keeping your batteries charged during storage? I have owned an RV for almost 10 years now and still not sure if I am doing it right. I presently own a 2007 Coachmen Cross Country diesel pusher. I have been using battery tenders on the batteries. I was told i could use the onboard charging system thru the inverter. Not sure on what I would have to do to use this system. I always use the chassis disconnect as well as house battery disconnect when It is going to be parked for any length of time. I just want to make sure I am doing it properly or have I been doing it wrong all these years ? any help or info is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

I chose to install a modest solar system. My batteries love it.
  • My converter has a "charge wizard" which allows 3 modes. Boost, normal, and storage. It essensially trickle charges once it's plugged in for 72+ hours. I leave plugged in all the time. I think your battery tender does the same thing. No reason to change what you're doing IMO.
  • If you have 120 VAC where you store it, AND, you properly program your inverter/charger, you can leave it on 24/7/365. Programming instructions are in your inverter/charger owners manual and include setting:
Battery technology (wet cell, AGM or gel)
    Battery bank size (in amp-hrs)
Temperature unless you have the optional temperature probe

On some coaches the inverter/charger charges only the house bank, on others, both banks. If yours does not charge the chassis battery, and you have a smart battery tender, you can use it to keep the chassis battery charged.

If both batteries are charged as above, no need to disconnect them.
