Got a "brake" today!
While driving the coach the last few miles back to our Adirondack cottage yesterday after a trip to Michigan via Ontario, I felt the brake pedal starting to drop during stops. I swung into a pull out a couple of miles from our road and took a look underneath to see if I spotted any fluid leaking. Sure enough, there was a fairly large amount brake fluid dripping off of the ABS module, not what I wanted to see. I replaced a leaky module on a friend's Ford 350 a year or so ago, and the module alone was north of $600! I limped the coach to the cottage, and today, after everything had dried out, I took another look. After adding a few ounces of fresh fluid, I found that the ABS unit was not the culprit! Instead, a small rusted area on the front brake feed line from the master cylinder to the ABS unit had sprung a leak with the fluid running back to the ABS before dripping off. This was really good news! $40 at NAPA and an hour later, the new brake line was installed and ready to bleed. Another 30 minutes with my pressure bleeder, and all is well again! The cost would have been even less, but I bought 2 quarts of DOT 4 fluid so I could flush the entire system while I was at it. The rest of the brake lines are in great shape, with no signs of rust anywhere. On closer inspection, there was a plastic wrapped wiring harness that was rubbing on the brake line. It must have been abrasive enough to wear through the coating on the steel line, allowing it to rust. The replacement line is copper/nickel, and I rerouted the wire harness, so that won't happen again anyway. All in all a good day, and flushing the system was on my fall to-do list anyway.
