i installed a dual CO/smoke detector in the rear bedroom, and a pair of separate CO and smoke detectors in the living room. the smoke detector in the back is an ionization type, but the one up front is an actual smoke detector. hopefully it will be less bothered by cooking on the stove. unless DW actually burns something.
we call the fire detector in the house the "kitchen timer", since it seems to go off whenever dinner is done! :) no smoke needed.
