Last spring I put more and heavier springs in the lower part of the couch but did not had time to do the back. So took the back part of the couch out this last weekend and found it had no springs just two steel rods and foam. Also not enough room to put springs in. After my wife and I thinking about it a while we came up with putting a piece of half inch ply wood over the frame and then using two of the exercise foam pads that are about 1/2 thick making 1 inch of very heavy closed cell foam over the plywood. Reinstalled the other foam and cover. It raised it so its level with the other part when down. And was firm but nice to lay on. I sleep on the couch so wanted it firm for my bad back..
Late this fall we had also replaced the foam in the dinette where my wife sleeps with extra firm foam from a Hospital bed matteress. There was just enough foam in a twin bed matteress to cut the dinette pieces from . So now we both have places to sleep that we like.
