'Twas yesterday, but close enough...
Disconnected and dropped the generator, to remove its starter motor, and verified that it was indeed toasted as I expected. It died when I attempted to exercise it over the winter and it didn't want to turn over/start. The starter had always been rather weak since I got the RV, not always able to spin the engine over the compression stroke on the first try. I discovered a couple of problems: one of the four brushes disconnected from its lead (which I think was the preexisting problem), and one or two open coils in the rotor (which is what finally did it in).
Free tip: If you need to drop your generator for service, consider running that side/end of your RV up on ramps before starting work for additional clearance. I couldn't quite get enough room to slide it out the side once down save by disconnecting the exhaust pipe. I elected to just work with it underneath the RV—not super convenient, but easier than hoisting it back up and going at things again.
