What do you do about dirty clothes?

We are on our first trip that is longer that 5 days. We will be gone for 10-12 days and haven't had this issue before. What do you do with your dirty clothes? Seems like a weird question I guess but...
1. Where do you put your dirty clothes? It seems like there is no logical place to hang our dirty clothes bag (we have the C with the bed in the back corner) and there isn't anywhere to build a hamper???
2. Do you wash your clothes? Where and how often? We are not staying at any campgrounds with these facilities and won't go to a laundry mat.

  • I've heard of several folks doing the bucket slosh in the shower while driving. Put a lid on it and let it "self agitate". Change the water at some point to rinse. Never tried this myself (I have a W/D) but makes sense.

We keep them in a black plastic trash bag in the shower. Easy to take out of the shower when someone needs to shower. We do go to laundromats in towns along the way to wash our clothes. One of goes to do the laundry the other goes to the market or other errands.

Here's a great way to wash clothes. Get an 18 gallon storage tub put a few clothes in it, fill about halfway with water add just a little laundry soap. Put lid on tub and start sloshing. Do this outside or in the shower if enough room. Slosh for about a minute. Take clothes out of tub to wring them out. Empty soapy water out of the tub. Rinse out the tub and then put clothes back in and fill halfway with water. Slosh again for a minute. Remove clothes and wring them out and hang up to dry.

There is a countertop crank washing machine made for RVs. Folks say it works well for one or two items at a time. Google RV counter top washing and you'll see a few different offerings.

This makes a laundromat sound like a vacation. :)

Yes, we wash our clothes when we run out of clean clothes. Our Southwind is equipped with a W/D combo. It's slow but, gets the job done. Sometimes we use the CG laundry.

One option is to hang your dirty clothes to one side of the closet or keep a drawer for dirty clothes. Make sure you take enough clothing for the trip.

Is there a reason you won't go to a laundromat? That seems to be the easiest option and many small towns have them?
  • We put out dirty clothes in laundry bag which we store in the shower. The only clothes that require daily changes is underwear etc - the pants, sweatshirts etc get re-used. We bring enough to avoid laundromats if all possible.
  • You'll just have to find someplace to stash a garbage bag. Change clothes less often, it's not a fashion show. And there's nothing wrong with a laundromat. And many laundromats will wash and dry and fold your clothes for a very reasonable price. You just drop them off and pick them up a couple of hours later. 10-12 days is only 4 sets of clothes plus extra socks and underwear, unless you're a real pig. Where do you keep your clean clothes? Just phase that area into dirty clothes storage as you go and wash back at home.
  • Is there a difference between campground facilities and a laundromat?
  • I wear them. In a pinch you can launder them in the shower or bucket. Oh, and I reuse a towel many times.
