what oil?

I just replaced the cap on my air compressor because of an oil leak now I need to find out what kind of Oil was in there so I can replace it. Is there a way to tell a difference between regular oil and synthetic? I don't know what to put in there. this is on a 2001 Damon ultrasport with a Cummings ISB 5.9

    This is a first for me.

    Every on-engine air compressor, whether on Caterpillar or Cummins engine was lubricated by the engine's oil pump/supply. No separate oil.

    So, is this an on-engine air compressor?

    Is there a place to add/check oil level?

    What brand and model compressor?

    If you are in a bind and have to guess, I recommend "air compressor oil".
    It usually is 10W non-detergent variety and is NOT common motor oil.
