what would an experienced rv'er look for

Been looking at used class A. Found one online, right size, good ratings. Price is below average retail, BUT, coach is three years old, only 8 thousand miles and has had no maintenance(oil change?).

Can you tell me what I should be looking for, or just try to find a diesel mechanic in the vicinity of the coach to look it over. My worry is that it has just been sitting for a while.

Probably your best course of action is two have two inspection performed. One by a heavy truck mechanic check the chassis and a second by an RV mechanic checking the house side.

If you are seriously interested, do the above. Motor homes are very complex creatures, and it would be money well spent.
  • Milkman,
If you haven't read the "sticky--First time buyer's guide" on top, I would highly recommend you read it--a wealth of information gathered from the folks on here.
  • Three years and 8K miles isn't good but probably not damaging. You can pull a sample of the oil and have an analysis performed. Tires should be OK age wise and the roof seals at three years old.

Do nothing make a low retail price offer because you will be taking a big risk that everything is either in working condition or who knows what condition. No telling what the black tank is holding if the engine oil is original.

You need to check the coach out in person. The batteries may not have been maintained (adding distilled water).... so check everything! And yes, you should have it checked over by a qualified diesel mechanic.

What kind of coach is it? You say that it's three years old so it's a 2011? What size engine?

    MM.
  • I could give you a list. Better you spend a little and have it checked over by a third party. Money well spent.
