Well said. Everybody's needs/desires/wallets differ. You start there and then look at candidates. The same goes for toads. People keep asking "what's the best toad?". Same answer.
Thank you! In my case, some of the criteria were:
-- 4x4
-- No generator
-- No propane
-- No black tank
-- No need for shore power
-- Four season capable
-- Minimum 1000 Km range
-- Under 25Ft.
-- Storage
Ndeke Luka achieves all of this, but probably costs three times as much as a much larger, basic, van based Class C. - DakzukiExplorer II

One of the first questions is 4x4 or 4x2?
If 4x4, then you are looking at Earthroamer, Tiger, GVX, and a few other, specialty builders. And you can expect a $25+k premium in the price. Not just for the 4x4, but for the higher quality construction, etc.
If 4x2, then there are others who are better qualified than I to help you.
I can tell you why I made the choices I did, in pedantic detail, but none of this may be applicable to your needs.

I'm just starting my hunt for an RV. I've decided on a Class C MH and was wondering if there was a consensus on which model is the best overall?
With your question you're probably implying "best overall" with the underlying assumption of "at an affordable price".
Perhaps another good way to begin shopping might be to ask "which model provides the best overall value".
i.e. We have a "classical shape and design" Class C motorhome that most folks would in no way consider as "best overall" in an absolute sense. However for what we paid for it, IMHO it was way up there in the running as a "best value" when we bought it. In fact a model similar to it is no longer available from any OEM today ... probably the margins would be too thin to offer it built and outfitted today the way we bought it several years ago.
For a classical shape and design Class C, I consider these as about the best if cost is no object - and hence kindof unaffordable:

For an atypical Class C motorhome, I consider these two as about the best made-in-America ones if cost is no object:

We have a Bengal Tiger (21ft). It can go almost anywhere (not rock climbing). We did a 15,000 mile R/T travel adventure in 2013 from Virginia to Alaska (lots of boondocking). Good luck with your choice of RV's. the most important thing is to enjoy every adventure...
