wheel size-might be the dumb question of the year

I notice that most manufacturers use 19 inch wheels on motorhomes 30 ft and less. I think Tiffin uses 22.5 on their 30ft. The wheels seem rather small especially when you see them side by aide with the larger wheels on a motorhome that is not much larger. Is there a rational reason for the small wheels.
  • So the most popular view is that smaller tires cost less in terms of tires, wheels and mechanism. Also the view is that if they had used 22.5 and folded in the expense the ride would have been better and overall it would be a more stable coach. It appears Tiffin does this and rarely gets any credit for it. If I were shopping again the 19 inch wheels would be a deal breaker. I would not buy anything with the smaller tires. From what I see in RV parks that pretty much means if you want a 30 ft motorhome with 22.5 tires you are limited to Tiffin and perhaps the Canyon Star line. Anyone else have smaller coach with larger feet.

Yup it is a cost/profit/ride/other stuff thing.

The larger wheels mean a different more expensive gear ratio, it also means the rig rolls a bit easier, the tires cost more but wear longer, and you get more sidewall meaning softer ride and they can hold up more coach (Weight).

The smaller tires cost less but wear faster so the factory makes more money but you spend about the same over all. In theory.

I like the larger tires.. WHY.. Well on my Damon Intruder with 22.5's if work needs to be done under the rig, Like lub jobs and such,,,, I do not need to heed the warnign about not getting under the rig when it's up on jacks.

    I don't need jacks

There is enough clearance for my 300+ pounds to crawl around under there all day with the jacks fully retracted and/or stowed (Depending on the jack) and the full weight of the coach on the tires. So there is absolutely no way for it to fall off the jack.
  • Cost vs. profit. Every legitimate business has the right to make a profit, and the more the better. So, any place that they can cut costs, they do. As long as it doesn't violate any laws or incur a liability issue, they do it.

It is our job as customers to use due diligence and do our homework before spending our hard earned money.
  • Cheaper wheels and tires and brakes? :h

I know that our 1997 30 Class A had 16" wheels!!! Not fun on the Espinoza del Diablo highway in Mexico, towing a Chevy Tracker! :E

From Durango at 6,000 feet up to 9000 feet, back to 6000 and up to 9000 again. Then back to 6000 and up some more before downhill (mostly) to Mazatlan at sea level. Would have been a lot easier with the 22.5" wheels and air brakes that we have now!

Here is a clip of part of the highway from a motorcycle cam (Not our's!)
