I know this is old, but this is so wrong I couldn't help but comment.
DEF does absolutely NOTHING to help with power or mileage. I would really love to know where you got that caca from...
DPF and EGR seriously choke a diesel engine making HP and mileage far worse.

But before you post another topic, it should be noted that you're wrong. DEF systems generally do not negatively impact MPG, and in fact, can often lead to a slight improvement in fuel economy by optimizing engine performance and reducing the workload on emission control systems, allowing for more efficient combustion; some manufacturers claim a fuel efficiency increase of up to 5% with DEF usage. Now if you totally DEF deleted a truck and re-tuned to run based on the lack of DEF equipment, it might get better mileage. But at what cost? The cost to remove it, the increase in emissions, loss of any warranty and it's illegal in most states and you might get marginal gains. Why bother?

No... I am not wrong. Not even in the slightest little bit wrong. Tell me you don't know diesels without telling me you don't know diesels.
Does DEF improve mileage on a DPF equipped vehicle without DEF? Maybe. That isn't the point. The point is the emissions equipment on diesels is VERY bad for the engine, REDUCES mileage dramatically, and does nothing for the environment. This is fact. Tree hug all you want, you'll still be wrong.- StirCrazyFeb 22, 2025Moderator
now your starting to mix your stuff up. def does nothing to help or hinder milage weather their is a DPF or not, it is an after treatment. a DEF will hinder milage and power if they are not operating properly, yes they are another restriction but they are engineered to work, that is why we see diesels with way more power getting better milage now than we did previously to 2007. now fuel milage hasn't always been as drastic of an increase as power has been but over all they are better than they were. when emissions were first introduced say early 2000's with he egr, then 2007 for the DPF and 2009ish for the DEF yes their were initial hits and they figured out the best way to get things to work together every time a new thing was introduced, but man that was 25 years ago now, they got it figured out now and there is no " bad" thing about the emissions, well aside from the egr valve.. plug that off if you can if now just clean it up when it gets plugged. and get good quality fuel and oil. change air filters and you know.. do the required maintenance and its all fine. there is even a fuel additive that Pittsburg power made in conjunction with someone else that actually cleans out the internals while giving the fuel a boost.
its not so much a case of tree hugging, if it was gas engines would be banned also, but it is a case of removing some very harmful particles from the air we breath. personally working with diesels (operating and fixing them) since the 80's I wish they would have done something years earlier then so many people wouldn't have lung issues that were in the industry. Now that is the DPF not the DEF. def is just a conversion from one type of chemical to another to make the output a little bit better in gasses. so to me, a DPF that gets replaced for free if it ever plugs up, get ride of DEF, its just corrosive to your exhaust and not really needed, but it is a inconvenience at best for the most part. which leaves us with the egr recirc. that is the worst thing you can have on a diesel period. Put a catch can and filter instead along with the CCV.
if funny no one ever talks about the ccv, especially on the ford 6.7 since there is no change out interval. if you have one it should be changed out at 60000 miles and every 60000 miles after that, you want to change that before it plugs up or it causes you all kinds of un necessary gasket replacements. if you see oil leaks around the upper or lower oil pans or anywhere else just change it fast. the problem is that its a 200 buck hit to replace, and if you have a newer 6.7 with the replaceable filters, throw them in the garbage and get the system off the older ones with the separator. even better get a ccv delete they might be up to double the cost but that will save you a tone of money in filters and repairs that won't be needed.
now having said all that, I personally believe there is a good use case for deleting the dpf, the def, the egr and the CCV. the EGR are just to prevent the turbo from getting sooted up and the passages from getting plugged. soot is corrosive and abrasive and not good to put in the intake path to go through the turbo and such CCV is just to prevent pressure from getting built up in the crankcase and a separator/filter to the atmosphere would be the best bet.
as for the def and dpf, if they are working properly then keep them, if you want a bit better milage and power you can run "emission ON" tunes. that's what I am running right now and pulling my 5th wheel I went from 24 L/100km down to 18-19 L/100km depending how I am driving so it was a significant drop. with my camper I went from 18 L/100km to 15 L/100km, but if they plug up... remember I was talking about the CCV separator that never gets changed when it should 🙄that is one of the things it will do put excessive oil into your combustion path which can plug up your DPF pretty good. some times you can get lucky and clean it out with multiple forced regens but if it goes on to long you end up doing frequent regens and at 1 gal of gas per regen then it does start affecting milage. so if that is not going to be a part that is mandated for free replacement, then if it goes it is cheaper to delete the truck. now the reason I don't have an issue with this as when you tune a diesel for more power you are increasing the efficiency of the diesel also. this gets you more power per volume of fuel used, which means you don't have to use as much fuel. so not only is it burning more efficiently, which reduces the amount of post combustion products, but it is burning less fuel for the same distance traveled. hence less pollution.
so I am on both sides of the fence here depending on the reason, a properly functioning emissions system is not an issue, but when the big ticket items are not working anymore you are handcuffing the person as they are not covered.

Yea, this is old. 12 years old. And mccsix hasn't been on here in about 5 years. If you have some valuable information you may want to post it in a new topic instead of buried in a decade old post.
