Where to add house battery?

I'm looking to add a second 12v house battery to our '93 23'6" Tioga Montara. Currently it has just one, located under the upper entry step. Anyone have a similar rig mind telling me what they did? Thanks!

  • The problem is that the 6v are usually larger than the 12v that come with a C. My RV has the battery under the step as well and the holder is wide enough for 2 group 27's but I can not put in 6v batts because they are taller and will short to the step when closed. You may have to measure the space and look for the largest single batt that will fit, change you lights to LED.
Of course if you have big bucks to spend, they now make lith ion batts the size of car batteries with more capacity but you could buy a Honda generator for less.

Connect batteries in PARALEL to double capacity,

Or connect two 6V deep cells in series for a bit more than double the capacity probably.

I did just that and my capacity is higher than with two twelve volts.

Maybe there is space in cabinet under the sink if it's near the existing battery. Connect batteries in PARALEL to double capacity, using long standard battery cables. Observe polarity when connecting. Probably need to have holes for ventilation underneath extra battery.

Issue there is venting for sure, also ignition sources. AGM would be the safest, but $$$.

  • Only have one, and space for one, 12v under the step.

My 09 Cambria had just one 12v. I went to 2 six volt deep cycle Trojan batteries in a series in the same holder and increased my storage capacity dramatically. Read up on battery amp hours and such and see what works for you. The lesser priced batteries tend to have less storage capacity.

Oo, I'll have to get some measurements on the 6v to see what I can fit in there. Give you enough juice for boondocking (+solar)?

  • I don't know how similar my C is but......it has TWO located under the step.
Have you measured there yet to see ??
