You have not seen a large dog with arthritis in hips. It is either a ramp or lift. Yes the dog will give it all she/he has and it is not fun to watch the failure.
And they will hurt themselves trying too. My Golden Retriever does not like being on the disabled list. If I let he'll try and get up the steps and end up falling backwards. Steps are made for people with two legs to climb. They are not designed for four legs. Large dogs will normally jump from step to step versus walk up one leg at a time with both sets of legs.
