I put the long stems on my inside duals at the last tire change and have no regrets. When I put new tires on the fronts I'll also use whatever is needed to get them out where no extensions are needed or desired.
I currently have short extensions on the fronts that seemed to work loose at times. I used some teflon pipe dope on them and cured that.
