Which one 340 or 360

I am considering a new mo ho. My question is the Winney 36m with 360hp cummins and 3000 allison that much better than the tiffen Allegro Red 36qsa with 340hp and a 2500 allison? Will I notice the difference?

  • 360 cummins and 3000 Allison is definitely the better drivetrain combo by far. With better resale value down the road also.
If the floorplan is equal it would be the choice.
Go to the Allison website and check out the advantages.
  • The 2500 series transmission requires a special "torque limiting" engine. The HP rating may be 340 but the torque has been limited to below 660-700 lbft and the GCW to 30,000 - 33,000 lbs to be able to use the 2500 series transmission.
This information is from Allison (http://www.allisontransmission.com/servlet/DownloadFile?Dir=publications/pubs&FileToGet=SA3362EN.pdf)
  • I'm also looking at the 36 Winn and Tiffen RED 36. I have 860# of torque now with my 36 Journey (350 cat) and would prefer not go down in ratings. I haven't driven either new coach yet but will soon when the local dealers get them in. Both plans work equally well for the two of us, so it comes down to driveability I guess. Prices are not that far apart with the Winn being a bit more money. I only tow a CRV so no issue on towing capacity.
  • One major difference is in the towing capacity, with the Allison 3000 have a higher towing capacity. Will you be towing a TOAD or a trailer and if so how heavy. This could be the factor in your decision.
  • I would be more concerned with the Allison 2500. Our friends have the ISB with the 2500 Allison and it works well, but you can't later add any performance products to the engine, because your limited by the 2500 Allison.

Even though this isn't a concern on a new purchase, almost everyone starts looking for more power with the ISB or ISC and you'll be limited with the 2500.
  • If it is ISB vs ISC you are looking it may only be 20 HP, but it is around 300 ft/lb of torque.
  • HP does not tell us everything...which engines are they? ISB (6.7), ISC (8.3)or ISL (8.9)?
  • Our HR 34 PDD was equipped with the 340 ISB/2500 Allison and was unbelievable. It always had 2800# behind it and I could never tell it was there. We only would fall below 50 mph if we got trapped behind a slow moving vehicle. It would however accelerate after being trapped unless the grade was extremely steep. When we moved our possessions from Los Angeles to East Tennessee I had our 7x16 enclosed trailer on the back. Judging from the tire wear when we got back to East TN I can tell you the trailer was severely overload (7000# gross) and the engine/trans combination handled it with no apparent decrease in performance.

I would pick the coach that has the best floor plan to that fits my needs, then engine & tranny then colors JMHO! Good Luck in whatever you choose.
