We had 2 class Cs, then a class A, and have now gone back to a class C. Maybe our story will save you some money.
We started with an older Class C and found we loved the flexibility of a motorhome over a trailer. After 2 years we upgraded to a 31' Winnebago class C on an E450 chassis. After 2 more years, I reasoned that for the size of class C we were driving, we could be in a class A and get the added advantage of the use of the cockpit area when parked not to mention the view while driving. So we traded it on a Winnebago Sightseer, 33c.
This spring, we traded that in for a 24' Itasca Navion 24V, here's why:
1) We didn't need all the extra space. Just because we had the room we took stuff we didn't need.
2) Because the unit was so large, we had to keep it parked remotely about 7 miles away. Aside from the added cost of storage, oftentimes the fact that it wasn't in our driveway led questions like "is it worth it to get it out for just 2 nights?". As a result, we found we used it less.
3) Harder to navigate, park, etc.
4) Fuel mileage. Our first Class C we got 11mpg, our second 9mpg, and the class A was about 7mpg. This also inhibited to use.
5) It was more difficult to navigate narrow roads and small campgrounds. Though it was only 2 feet longer than our prior class C, it was wider and taller as well which added to the challenge.
We are primarily weekenders so perhaps when that day comes that we just take the interstate down to a slab somewhere in the sunny south, we may change back to an A but for now we love the agility of our class C. Good luck in your decision.
