Why do we need such a big windshield???

Why do class A motorhomes have such a big windshield? The top 18" or so has cabinets or a TV set hanging in front of it on the inside anyway. They could easily make the windshields 24" shorter than they are. They would be less expensive to replace and easier to clean. We traded in a Thor ACE that had probably half as tall a windshield as our current motorhome, it was a lot easier to clean and you still had plenty or room to see everything. :h

  • Because "A"s are motor coaches, i.e. a bus chassis/body. Buses have big front windows, hence "A"s do too. They show how the high end units are made on the travel channel and talk about where their coach bodies come from.
  • The reason is styling, so it looks like an expensive motorcoach, whether it is or not. 25-35 years ago most A's had smaller glass, surrounded by more plastic or metal. But so did the buses before the advent of GMC's New Look in the 1950s.

Got more than big windows from changes in the motorcoach industry. They got us an extra six inches of width, and breaking through the 35-foot and 40-foot (in turn) single vehicle length restrictions
  • Rwake901, if was painted, it would most likely fade and the bug guts just eat the paint. Even though the glass is not that usable, it doesn't fade. Of course it could get chipped with rocks but it gives a cleaner look on the front.

We pretty much have full use of the view as we don't have cabinets in that area (two small ones at each corner). Our TV is on a ceiling lift so that area is clear on travel or parked if we are not using the TV.

Because if it wasn't we would just be traveling the way everyone else does with their small porthole windows in a plane, the small windshield in an automobile, SUV, pick-up, or Class B & C, or the small side windows of a train or bus.
The only way to get a better view is to be out in the wide open spaces on foot or on a bicycle or motorcycle.
That big windshield is just ONE of the many things that makes a Class A so much better than traveling any other way.

Don't get me wrong I love my class A motorhome.. But my point is the top section is blocked by cabinets and/or a TV hanging on the inside anyway so you can't see out the top section anyway, so why make them so tall?

  • So that you can see that big beautiful, spectacular scenery in this great country that we live in? I had a class C for a while after purchasing my A I felt like it was a whole new world.
