I purchased a 2007 Damon Tuscanny with a Cat C7 engine. That cat ran without any problems until last week. Heading north on Rt 65 out of Alabama I heard a noise out back, then water temp hit critical mass. Limped into a campground 2 miles away. Called GoodSam towing where they had taken me to a diesel repair shop. Sat there a week for repairs to the fan blade hub bearing. This bearing had no grease fitting. It was the new style bearing system that had problems when engine reached 30 to 50 thousand miles. Mine was around 49,000.Numerous post on the net had individuals with the same problem. I was told by a cat parts rep, the new hub would last around 40,000 miles.By the time I got back on the road the invoice racked up near $4,000.00.(Ouch)Since Cat had problems with this hub bearing, I wonder if they would help with the cost on the parts? What is the opinion out there? I will go for it!!

I guess it never hurts to ask. However, if the NEW hub is only expected to have a service life of 40,000 miles, my guess is that they will maintain that this is a maintenance item and the failure at 49,000 miles was to be expected and was not a failure of a component that should have had a much longer service life.

Write them nicely and ask politely.Use snail mail and get the name of the person in charge of customer relations.Be nice be business like, thank them for their time and cross your fingers

9 years old...I doubt you will get your money. But it can't hurt to try.

I have no idea if Cat will help with the cost.
But, it's a 2007 rig. My guess would be no.
Unless they have a really good warranty.

I don't believe the water pump is what failed the fan hub on a rear radiator motor is what failed. Removing the radiator may have been involved to get to the hub.
The op is lucky as I've read with many that fail , the fan flys lose hitting the radiator and CAC taking them out also ! Then we can talk some " real" money ! Very lucky ! From what I've read before , from others ( I had a c7) your on your own but hey it never hurts to try.
What I read most did was put a hub with a lube fitting on it. Actually I didn't know cat still replaced them with the non lube models

If it was commonly known there are issues between 30,000 and 50,000 miles, and you had 49,000 miles, shouldn't the water pump be replaced as part of preventative maintenance???

I'm getting ready to replace my tires at 30,000 miles. They are going on 8 years old. If one blows and costs me a lot of money in repairs, I don't think I can get Michelin to pay for it!

just curious, why would a water pump be prone to fail at 30,,to 50k. on cars or other pickup trucks they last a longgggg time.

Over heating the engine may lead to more pressing concerns. The adventure may just be starting.

Be aware that BOTH sealed and greasable fan hub bearings are available from Caterpillar as replacements.

They went to sealed beginning with engine production 1/03 because very few were greasing them.

In MY order of preference:
A greasable that IS greased.
A sealed.
A greasable that is NOT greased.

And, no, this is totally unrelated to the water pump (different area of the engine, different belt driving it on most applications).
