I'm assuming you've lived in Massachusetts long enough to know how anal they are with vehicle inspections, and how eager most police departments are to pull violators over. All part of their "revenue enhancement" strategy. :)
Read the link and paragraph I posted. Covering any more than what is specified by the RMV will get you into trouble, and it's on the front windshield so it's not like you can hide it. And since most (if not all) states have similar laws for the front windshield, you won't even be safe out of state.
And yes, in states such as Massachusetts, they have different levels of "legal tint" for factory glass and after-market tints. Anything that comes from the factory is fine. If it's after-market, then the tint levels change.
Good Luck in solving your problem. I, for one, try not to bring any additional "constabulary attention" to my vehicles. (Different story than when I was a "kid" in my '71 Mach 1 Mustang. But I'm past that stage in my life now. :) )
