Windshield leak

After a recent rain, I saw water on the dashboard and noticed it coming from what appears to be the top of the winshield. We have a 2008 Winnebago Sightseer and I seem to remember reading about a problem with the frame around the windshield rusting out. Could that be the problem? I've checked roof caulking and all seems to be in order. Seam where front cap joins the roof was recently completely redone and looks fine.

Thanks for your replies. I have checked all clearance lights and the caulking and all seems to be in order. Guess I'll have to try to pull off the molding on the out side of the window at the top. Inside the head liner/ceiling comes down past the top of the window. Can't see any way to get behind with out removing a lot of "stuff".

Incandescent clearance lights are tough to check. If water gets in around the removable lens, it can leak in to the coach along the electrical wires even if the base of the clearance light looks like it is sealed.
They do make sealed LED clearance lights that are truly sealed and once the base is caulked, no water can get under the lens and find it's way in to your coach.
  • I had both my windshields caulked and resealed this past summer my brackets are beyond repair so I'm running them until they need to be replaced. I have a dehumidifier that I bought 3 years ago that really helps me keep water out of the windshield brackets. I empty it once a week 3 to 4 inches of water a week that is not going down into my brackets. Best device that I ever bought for my RV. Also remember Winnebago glues there windshields in place. If you try to remove them from the windshield brackets the windshield will most likely break.

  • We bought a used 2002 Itasca 32V Sunrise, had the same problem. Did what previous poster said aboutpulling off the trim on both the inside and outside and reseal. Haven't had a leak in the 2 years since we bought it. There was a fair amount of rust on the upper portion of the passenger side windsheild, that's where the leak was.
  • Oldchief is correct on things to check, but when you do also check to see if it is leaking around the clearance lights. Could be either or both.
  • Pull the trim off the inside and look for rust. Wire brush it good, paint with a rust preventative, let dry, then put silicon caulk on it.

Pull the outer trim off the outside and do the same thing. Just be careful you don't crack the windshield. My outer trim just pulled off after removing the metal end pieces.

My rig an '05 Itasca Meridian. Winnebago product.

What I did stopped my problem but don't wait too long or the rust will require MAJOR, VERY EXPENSIVE repairs to the tune of about $4,000 from what I've read.
  • Is it running down the inside of the windshield? if yes, then a windshield problem. If not running down the inside of the windshield, I'd suspect a roof leak or bad caulking on the running lights.
