Windshield wiper problem

Recently my driver's side windshield wiper is not making contact with the glass, on the lower part of the blade. Also, the passenger side wiper arm seems to sit higher than the driver side.

This is not a problem with the blades themselves, as they were replaced about a year ago.

Any suggestions about what the problem might be and how to fix it ?

Thanks for your help.
  • Any chance the wiper arm was bent by a service station attendant, when cleaning the windscreen? Often you can just tweak (bend) the arms slightly to apply more pressure to the glass.

If its the actual pivoting that has changed, and they aren't covering the windscreen like they used to, it could be the pivot, or the base of the arm itself is stripped. There are splines on the pivot, and ones on the arm to match, when the arm slides down on to it. A nut is tightened down to hold them together. Some parts are made of aluminum, and can strip easily.

This usually happens when the wiper is turned on and the blade is trying to move, but is frozen to the glass from frost, or has a weight of snow on it, or in the summer months when the rubber just sticks to the glass..The wiper motor spins, but the arm does not.
You could just try tightening the nut, to see if that does the trick, as it may have come loose. Otherwise you need to remove the nut, pull the arm off and inspect the splines on both the pivot and the base of the arm for damage. Hopefully its just an arm, as the pivo can be a pain to replace..expensive too.
  • I suggest you place a call to Diesel Equipment Corp Wiper Division in Greensboro, NC. Their service is great. They can tell you if you can get a replacement arm, frameless blades, which stick to the windshield and how to find the correct kit number.
  • I solved the problem. The arm that holds the wiper blades should be able to pivot, to allow the blades to stay in contact with the windshield.
The driver's side was really stuck and would not pivot. I just sprayed it and loosened it slightly.......... problem solved.

    Another WD-40 fix ??? :@
  • My wipers on the rv started acting erratic, and tracked it down to loose mounting bolts under the hood. Since the mounting is attached to the front cap fiberglass, cranking down on the nut for a tight fit will probably crack the fiber glass. Snug with a bit of thread lock was the best I could do. We will see how long before tightening..
