winegard antenna

I want to ditch my old winegard antenna and replace it with something newer antenna-wise. Can I do that and just use the existing hardware? Such as the hand crank? And is it worth it to do this? 1988 Wimmebago Warrior...

  • Winegard is hopeless.....They flat out say they have no idea....They have no interest in selling me anything. Very poor service..Just throw up their hands and go to the next customer. Who would know about antenna upgrades but them? It's what they do. Just not very well...
  • I can crank the winegard all the way up and it's the same as having it flat. WINEGARD does not make the wingman attach for this relic....but reception here-to get anything is amazing...
  • Just my 2 cents, but I was watching TV in my RV yesterday with the batwing with a wingman attachment cranked down AND a tarp still covering the RV from the winter and I still got 36 channels! I watched the Indy 500 in the RV, so... It works for us
  • THIS AREA is quite rural with mountains.....my current old winegard picks up a total of 7 channels, two of which are in Spanish....I see the problem therein with the need for the DC voltage but watching a guy install the Jack I see he simply plugs the adapter into the TV set. Hmmmm......Still confused but hope to sort this out..

Just keep in mind the JACK requires a DC voltage from the cable to operate.

I too compared the two antenna a few years ago and also found the JACK antenna was better. However in my case the JACK Antenna really had to be spot on pointing to the TV source compared to the BATWING and both of them picked up the same TV signals where I was at doing the comparison... My BATWING antenna also has a built-in amplified like the Jack does... Both antennas fit the same mounting head... I will switch off sometimes...

In my case sitting here in King George and pointing to Washington DC TV towers 50-60 miles I have to move my antenna somewhat if I am using the JACK antenna... Washington DC has TV towers on both sides of the town... When using the BATWING setup I can get all of the TV stations with same direction pointing...

They best antenna test was using one of the LOWES $90 full yagi antenna... It didn't last very long however for me having to take it down and folded up everytime I packed up for travel mode... It also would hit tree branches a lot turning it haha... I actually had in a few camp sites for awhile and sure got a lot of comments from the RV bunch haha...

Another antenna I used in my test was the eight BOW-TIE flat panel array. This worked outstanding as well - probably better than the JACK. I could tell right away however that it would not hold up to be taken down and stowed for travel so never considered using it on the POPUP trailer... It is currently on the peak of my house here picking up OTA antenna signals...

In my situation the BATWING is the best one for me to use...

  • I’ve had new Jack and new Winegard side by side, the Winegard is hands down better.
  • MY WINEGARD antenna is so old winegard does not make bat wing add ons for it. They tell me it's not even in their database. It is from 1988 or so....So I assume the Jack head replacement will fit...Seems as if it would.....
  • Yes you can use your existing hardware to mount the newest type antenna.

When I bought my RV it had a Winegard Batwing that was not working, I cleaned up all connections and tested to see if it was broken, it was,so I replaced it with a new bat wing then ran a Channel Scan I was not impressed with the amount of channels that I got. This was done in my driveway here in the south bay of So Calif about 30 miles from the transmitters, using my SensarPro.

I then went out and got a Wingman add on, that put my channel scan up to 85,but I had a clearance problem with the Wingman

So I opted to put a Jack Antenna on and my channel scan went up to 174

    Cheaper too than the Winegard

I always get beat up by the techies, The debate will go on and on, but I know what works best for me,in the real world.
  • Put a new Winegard Sensar IV head on it, probably replace the coax cable end.
  • The Winegard Bat wing is the best antenna you can have. If it’s old and no amp I would buy a new one and add a Sensar Pro amp to the mix.

If your antenna is still working just add the amp.
