Winnebago Cheiftain

Hello All
We are currently looking at getting into a class a and are currently looking at the above motorhome. it is a 36g on a ford chassis,v 10 engine and it has the basement air conditioner. Its a 2001 model.
Does anyone have one of these and what kinds of issues have you had?
We presently have a fifth wheel an thought that we would go to a motorhome. Thanks in advance of any and all info.
  • I had windshield rust issues that caused leaks around the windshield. I used black 1 inch 3M moisture resistant tape around the top rubber moulding and stopped the leak. I like the basement ac unit because that reduces the chance of a leak in the ceiling from around the ac seal. The Ford F53 V10 is a good combination and very reliable.
  • A friend has a 2000 Chieftain and has very few issues. Failed sway bar bushings, some wire bad on the transfer switch and a capacitor on the a/c is all I know of. Pretty minor.
  • I had a 99 model 34Y I think. no issues thru 15 years of use. at the time it was their top of the line in gassers.

  • We had a 1999 and had a problem with the fiberglass roof separating were it meets the side wall. Took it back to Winnebago but they never did fix it right. Check it out, I don't think it was all of them just a few.
  • We had a 2000 Chieftain for about 7 years and had a few issues with it. One being the windshield frame rusting it came from Michigan so we thought that was why.Other than that it was a good solid RV.Traded it for a Journey because we liked Winnebago so well.
