Winnebago View 24H sofa replacement

Hi all, have a quick look question

I have a 2009 Winnebago View 24h with a jackknife sofa, I'm looking to change out the sofa because of the following reasons;:
1. It's very uncomfortable for sleeping especially since the seat base part slopes down, it almost feels likes you're going to fall of the bed so to remedy this I used a couple of 2x4 to prop up the seat base part but then the back part is now more sloped
2. When riding in the back on the sofa the seat is very bouncy, I think it has to do with the way the seats are made and the cushion they used.

I really want a sofa with an air mattress but don't think I have the room so looking to buy a better jackknife. Any recommendations, I've been looking at the Dakota and Belmont at shop4seats.
  • Several members on the View-Navion Forum on Yahoo have removed the cushions from the jackknife bed, leaving the end frames with the mechanism, and fitting thick furniture grade plywood with reinforcements, to the mechanism, and then fitting Futon mattress cushions to it. One person made a extra flip up piece to make the bed wider. This makes for a nice flat bed and a decent place to sit also.

If you do enough searching, you probably can find the pics.

  • DW does not like the channel in the middle where it hinges, and finds the dinette/bed hard & flat table surface better on her back.

Since we take a couple grand-urchins with us occasionally, I have toyed with the idea of replacing that bed with one that converts to two bunk beds.
  • Thanks for the suggestion CharlesinGA, my DW likes the idea so will definitely look into it

Great idea Gonzo42, my DW likes sleeping on the dinette as well.
  • I don't have a View but mine is identical to the View H floorplan. Like you, our jacknife sofa sloped down badly toward the aisle and was generally pretty lumpy and uncomfortable as a bed. I removed the cushions, added some steel tubing as supports, tried to level it as much as possible, and covered it with plywood.

We initially tried using a futon mattress but found it really heavy and difficult to deal with. After returning the futon, we started asking around at local furniture shops and found one that could get custom cushions made nearby. The cushions cost us around $400 but we are really happy with the result. I still have the OEM cushions and they can be put back if it's ever necessary.

Here's a link to one of the View owners who went the futon route:
